Permian Road Safety Coalition Receives National Public Service Award From U.S. Department of Transportation

MIDLAND, Texas — The Permian Road Safety Coalition (PRSC) was recognized on the national stage Monday, receiving a Public Service Award from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) during the Lifesavers Conference on Roadway Safety.

PRSC President and CEO Mike Smith accepted the award on behalf of the coalition, honoring the organization’s work to reduce roadway fatalities across the Permian Basin through innovative public-private partnerships and employer-led safety training initiatives.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s lead agency for highway safety, presents the Public Service Award annually to individuals and organizations that have demonstrated measurable success in reducing traffic deaths and injuries. Since the program’s inception in 1983, fewer than 400 recipients nationwide have received the honor.

This recognition reflects the commitment of our partners across the Permian Basin who are working every day to make our roads safer,” said Mike Smith. “This work has never been more important.”

PRSC was recognized for its work to reduce roadway fatalities through innovative public-private partnerships and employer safety training initiatives.

Through coordinated training programs, data-driven strategies and ongoing stakeholder engagement, PRSC has contributed to a measurable reduction in roadway fatalities across its 28-county region in West Texas and Southeast New Mexico.

“This award is a testament to what can be accomplished when a region comes together around a shared goal,” Smith said. “We are proud of the progress we’ve made and remain focused on continuing this work.”

The Lifesavers Conference, held annually, is the nation’s premier gathering of traffic safety professionals, bringing together experts from across the country to share best practices and recognize impactful safety initiatives.
