Texas Mutual: More activity brings more workplace accidents

More activity gave rise to more workplace safety incidents in 2023, according to the workplace safety trends report just issued by Texas Mutual Insurance Company.

Overall, there was a nearly 6% increase in severe injuries reported to Texas Mutual in 2023 than the previous year.

The construction industry remained at the top of the list, with more than triple the reported claims of any other industry. According to Texas Mutual’s report, accidents included a 500% increase in power and communication line-related incidents and a 175% increase in oil and gas pipeline and related structures construction. The company does not break down reports by geographical area.

“We’ve written more policies,” explained Eric Bourquin, vice president of safety services at Texas Mutual. “Think of construction as a whole, it has gained a disproportionate number of projects.”
